Mom was all chatty about Lucky when I walked in the house to pick up the kitten so Julia could take her back for the weekend. We’d had her for almost one entire week, and I didn’t remember what it was like before she was in my life.

“Hello, Julia, it’s so nice to see you,” Mom said in a hushed voice as we came in through the kitchen door to walk into the living room.

“Mom, why are you whispering?” I asked, my voice at normal volume.

She shushed me. “The baby is sleeping.”

She pointed at the cat bed that she’d bought for Lucky. I also noticed a massive box next to the couch.

“What’s this?” I asked, and Mom glared. “Julia, it’s lovely to see you.”

“Nice to see you,” Julia whispered, and she gave me a wink when Mom turned to look at the box.

“Oh, that’s a cat tree. I bought it for you.”

“Okay, how big is it?” I asked. The barn wasn’t that spacious, and the box was huge.

“Oh, it goes up to seven feet, I think?”

I bit back a curse. “That seems a little excessive.”

“Kittens need exercise, and they like high places,” Mom said, as if that made sense.

“That’s really sweet,” Julia said. “I was thinking about getting one for my place, but not nearly that big. I’m glad she’ll have one when she’s here.”

I shared a look with Lucky.

“You don’t need two cat trees, do you?” I asked the kitten.

Lucky meowed and then dashed over to jump on top of the box.

“I think she’s given her answer,” Mom said, giving me a smug look.

“I’m being ganged up on,” I said to Lucky as Julia giggled.
